Last day I was reading the book titled "The Science of Being Well", by Wallace Wattles, an author that I have not heard of until my Kindle recommended me his book. A great deal of this book is concerned about what to, when to and how to eat. It was intriguing to see how the ideas on the subject were similar to how a Qi-Gong practitioner would eventually do these activities. The author supports the idea that you don’t really need to worry about doing a certain diet. The rule is simple just eat whatever you want and when you feel hungry. This is true as long as you are able to feel the natural hunger that you body feels, which means it is in need of nutrients. Of course, many people are not able to differentiate between natural hunger and longing for certain tastes and stimulations. One extra rule is to chew your food until it gets liquified. Digestion starts with saliva in the mouth. This is an evolutionary feat that saves incredible energy (qi) for the digestive system. It is common sense that swallowing big chunks of food will put your digestive system in pressure. His idea that you are fully energised after a good sleep - if you had been fed well the day before - and you should have minimal, and probably no need of a breakfast, makes a lot of sense from a Qi Gong perspective. So instead of the idea of eating and spending energy, we should think in terms of spending energy and later replacing the cells. As a matter of fact if you eat without feeling hunger you might end up with less energy than before as you have turned your digestive system on when it was not the right time for your body. Of course the crucial point is to be able to differentiate between real hunger and appetite. One sure method to assure this is practicing an internal art like Qi-Gong, which will connect you deeply with you body. After a few weeks of daily practice you should already be feeling when you are really hungry. Fasting is another option to differentiate hunger and sole appetite. Sometimes even a simple 24 hour fasting will make you aware of what real hunger feels like, probably accompanied by some liquids in the mouth. Another method to connect with your natural hunger is doing a hiking trail non-stop for at least 1 week. After a few days of hiking you are able to feel even how even a single peanut recovers the cells of your body. Once you have a perfect understanding of when you have natural hunger, the body will tell you which nutrients to take in. At this point you should totally trust your feeling and go for which ever food that you find appropriate. Eating only when we are hungry seems like a simple task, however in the modern days with so many option around it can be a little more challenging than it seems. So, I invite you give it a try. For 1 week only eat when you are hungry, do not eat if you do not feel hunger. Eat only the foods you like and chew them until they are digested in your mouth.
